Project description The objective of this project was to find and solve a real world problem, of our choice. My group chose juuling and E-cig use. One of the main reasons we chose this topic was because juuling is such a big epidemic for many young people (teens in particular). We also came to the realization that our own school had a big problem with juuling. Throughout this project, we made action steps towards a solution for nicotine abuse and the many side effects it has. We executed this project by creating an engineering design Cycle.
Engineering design cycle Identify need - we needed to find a solvable world problem. We chose juuling and E-cig use.
Research problem - we then needed to collect valid data in order to get a full understanding of the problem we were dealing with.
Select the most promising solution - after discussing many ideas, my group decided that our most promising/achievable solution was constructing nicotine free pods.
Construct a prototype - we created our nicotine free pod by deconstructing a pre-existing pod and filling it with glycerin. We also created a juul using cardboard and an old phone wire to insure our product would work. Develop possible solution (brainstorm) - we then discussed with our group any possible solutions we could think of.
Communicate design - we ran our idea past mr. williams and he agreed that our solution of choice was achievable.
Redesign - we didn't have to do much reconstructing of our project, but we had some minor errors in terms of our use of electricity.
Repeat - if we were asked to repeat this project I think my group would in the end expand on our pre-existing ideas and potentially evaluate market costs, health effects and regulations.
Reflection During this project, I was lucky enough to be paired up with two of my really good friends who also share a similar way of thinking. We worked flawlessly together and pushed the boundaries of a moderately controversial topic. When it came to time management my group worked very efficiently. we never felt stressed out or hurried to finish, in fact we finished many aspects of our project before our given timeline. I always felt my ideas were heard and tried my best to make sure my teammates felt the same way. If anything, I could have done a better job having a more dominant role, in general I tend to let others take the lead. I also could have done some more research in the potential restriction of our product, specifically in schools. Overall, this project was a very educational, enjoyable experience.
